Rules for Exhibitors

1. Each competitor must qualify in a local science fair in order to compete in the East Central Oklahoma Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

2. All competitors must adhere to the International Rules for Pre-college Science Research Guidelines for Science & Engineering Fairs (available from student sponsors or science fair coordinators or on the ISEF Web site
: http://www.sciserv.org/isef/primer/rules.asp).

3. Projects must adhere to all federal, state and local laws and regulations.

4. Each competitor may enter only one project which covers research done over a maximum and continuous 12 month period between January 2007 and March 2008.

5. No exhibit may be displayed that is an exact duplicate of an exhibit displayed by the student any previous year.

6. Team projects may have a maximum of three members.

7. All work on the project must be done by the exhibitor, however, any adult may advise. Adults must not do any of the experimentation or build, make, write, print or type any part of the exhibit or report.

8. The exhibitor must supply all materials, tools and equipment for the installation of the project at the regional fair site.

9. Every competitor must submit Research Plan 1A, Approval Form 1B and the Checklist for Adult Sponsor. Certain projects require additional certification forms (See item #8 Form IA).

10. Experiments that involve human subjects, non-human vertebrate animals, pathogenic agents, controlled substances, recombinant DNA, or human/animal tissue require approval from an Institutional Review Board or Scientific Review Committee before experimentation begins. (See item #8 Form IA).

11. Each project in grades 7-12 must submit a (maximum) 250 word abstract which summarizes the year's work. Each project in Grades 4-6 must be accompanied by a short summary.

12. The exhibit must not exceed 76 centimeters in depth and 122 centimeters in width and 274 centimeters in height, including the table on which the project sets.

13. It is recommended that each project display a project data book and a research paper.

14. None of the following can be displayed:

  • living organisms; taxidermy specimens or parts; preserved vertebrate or invertebrate animals; human or animal food; human and animal parts or body fluids (exceptions: teeth, hair, nails, dried animal bones, histological dry mount sections and completely sealed wet mount tissue slides);
  • laboratory or household chemicals (exceptions: water integral to an enclosed apparatus or water supplied by the fair's Display and Safety Committee);
  • poisons, drugs, controlled substances, hazardous substances or devices (for example, firearms, weapons, ammunition, reloading devices);
  • dry ice or other sublimating solids;
  • sharp items; flames or highly flammable display materials;
  • batteries with open-top cells;
  • awards, medals, business cards, flags;
  • photographs or other visual presentations depicting vertebrate animals in surgical techniques, dissections, necropsies, other lab techniques, improper handling methods, improper housing conditions, active Internet or e-mail connections as part of displaying or operating the project, etc...

15. The following items are allowed to be displayed at the fair: dried plant materials and soil or waste samples if permanently sealed in acrylic or other similar material.

16. Entries are limited to 15 projects per grade division from the local qualifying fairs.

17. The following items must be in the hands of the regional fair director by the February 29, 2008, deadline:

  • Form IA
  • Form IB
  • Checklist for Adult Sponsor form
  • Any other certification form required for the project
  • Abstract for grades 7-12 or a summary for grades 4-6.
  • $4.00 entry fee per project.

Late entries will not be accepted!
