Trojans Win Tough Battle
03/08/2010
Allen Community College of Iola, KS. ventured to Seminole on Thursday only to lose a hard fought battle against a Trojan team that wouldn’t give up. SSC won the contest 10-9.
During the first inning SSC scored 3 runs which kept them the lead until the third when ACC put six players over the plate. The home team answered in the fifth with three more that reclaimed the lead. Both teams were tied after the sixth. Allen took the lead in the seventh with one run, but SSC rallied in two runs in the eighth for which their opponent had no answer.
Morgan Treaster opened the game on the mound with Zach Williams taking over in the third, Blake Payne in the fifth, and Jerod Peper (2-0) in the seventh earning him the win.
Zack Luevanos belted out two homeruns and a single with four at-bats, David Jackson went 2-3, both doubles, and Mark Cochran was 1-4 with 2 RBI’s.
SSC then played on Friday versus Western OK State College and lost 4-3 which puts them at 11-4 on the season. Rich Hawkins recorded the loss.
The contest scheduled for March 8th was canceled due to inclement weather, so the Trojans will take to their home field on March 11th at 1:00 p.m. with Hutchinson Community College in a double header.
Trojans Trounce Murray State
3/02/2010 - SEMINOLE, OK
The bats were strong for Seminole State College on Tuesday as the Trojans ran over Murray State College 15-4. The win puts their record at 10 wins and 3 losses.
SSC recorded 16 hits including Jon Ervin’s and Rich Hawkins’ first homeruns of the season. Other hitters were: Dalton Nelson, 2-4, single, double, 2 RBI’s; Jonathan Clark, 3-4, 2 singles, double, 1 RBI; Zack Luevanos, 3-4, 3 doubles, 2 RBI’s; Hawkins, 2-4, single, HR, 2 RBI’s; Ervin, 3-4, 2 doubles, HR, 2 RBI’s.
Shane Broyles started off the Trojans on the mound and earned the win. The Trojans will host Allen Community College from Hayes, KS. on March 4th at 2:00 p.m. and Western OK State College on March 6th at 1:00 p.m. See the full schedule and results on the SSC website at www.sscok.edu.
Trojans Take Two Wins
2/28/2010 - SEMINOLE, OK
The Seminole State College baseball team hosted Iowa Western Community College from Council Bluffs, IA. on Sunday in a double header. SSC eked out two wins, 12-9, 6-5.
In the opener, the Trojans had a strong offense in the second inning bringing in 5 runs. By the end of the fifth inning SSC was up 10-5. IWCC attempted a comeback with 4 runs in the 6th, but the home team answered with one run of their own. Iowa was scoreless in the seventh.
The Trojans slugged out 12 hits with Jonathan Clark and Kevin Phillips each hitting a homerun and a single, with Phillips adding a double. Spencer Barnett had 2 singles and an RBI, Chris Williams had a single, a double and 1 RBI. Clark and Phillips batted in 3 runners and 2 runners, respectively.
Rich Hawkins began the game on the mound with Chase Stevens taking over in the third and Jon Ervin in the sixth. Stevens (2-0) earned the win and Ervin the save.
Game 2 of the day saw the Trojans trying to come from behind after the first inning. A homerun from Austin Rycroft (his second of the season) in the fifth inning tied the game at 5-5, and another homerun from David Jackson in the seventh put away their opponent for good. Rycroft also recorded a double and 4 RBI’s, while Jackson pounded out a double and 1 RBI.
Aaron Rosborough pitched the first three innings for SSC, Wayland Moore took over in the fourth, and Derek Howell finished up the game coming in to the fifth. Howell (1-0) is listed as the winning pitcher. Seminole recorded 8 hits and 1 error.
The Trojans now have 9 wins and 3 losses for the season, and will return to action on March 2nd at Murray State College in Tishomingo, OK at 1:00 p.m. They will play at home on March 4th at 2:00 p.m. against Allen County.
Trojans Bring Home Two Victories
2/25/2010 - BROKEN ARROW, OK
The Trojan baseball team brought home two victories on Thursday off a double header against Neosho County Community College 6-5, 6-2.
Dalton Nelson hit his second homerun of the season along with a single, and Rich Hawkins had a double and 3 RBI’s in game 1. SSC recorded 8 hits and 1 error. Morgan Treaster started the pitching rotation for the Trojans with Zach Williams taking over in the sixth inning and Chase Stevens in the seventh. Williams (2-0) earned the win and Stevens the save. Zach Luevanos caught for the complete game.
Game 2 of the afternoon found the Trojans ready to dole out the punishment again. Neosho County could not score after their two runs in the first two innings and only earned four hits for the game. SSC slugged out 11 hits and had two errors. Luevanos produced his first homerun, a single, and 2 RBI’s. Nelson had a single and a triple while Jon Ervin hit 2 singles.
Jerod Peper was the starting pitcher and kept the Trojans going through 6 innings until Jorge Rodriguez took over in the seventh. Peper, now 2-0, earned the win. Mark Cochran spent all seven innings behind the plate.
With a record of 7-3, SSC will take on Iowa Western at home on February 28th at 1:00 p.m.
Trojans Handle Independence
2/23/2010 - SEMINOLE, OK
The Seminole State College baseball team took to their home field on Tuesday to dual Independence Community College of Kansas. The game was tied 2-2 after the fourth inning, and 3-3 after the sixth inning. Then the Trojans took control of the game scoring four runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to win the game 8-5.
Shane Broyles started on the mound followed by Wayland Moore in the sixth, Zach Williams in the seventh, and Jorge Rodriguez in the ninth. Williams recorded his first win of the season.
Hitters for SSC include Chris Williams, 2 hits, 2 RBI’s, 1 run; Justin Gibson, 1 hit, 2 RBI’s; and Dalton Nelson, 3 hits, 3 RBI’s, and 1 homerun.
The Trojans travel to Broken Arrow, OK. to take on Neosho County from Kansas on February 25th at 1:00 p.m.
Trojan Baseball Nabs Another Win
2/17/2010 - DENISON, TX
The Seminole State College baseball team traveled to Grayson Community College in Denison, TX on Wednesday and stayed true to form by coming home with the win. Their record is now 5-1.
SSC scored 2 runs in each of the third, fifth, and seventh innings while holding GCC to 5 runs. The Trojans recorded 7 hits and 2 errors to GCC’s 10 hits and 3 errors. Shane Broyles started off the game pitching for SSC and took the win. Blake Payne took over in the eighth inning for the save. Jonathan Clark hit another homerun and now has three on the season.
Next up for SSC is a double header against Jefferson County on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Oiler Park in Seminole.
Trojan Baseball Now 4-1

The Seminole State College baseball team has been quite active the past several days. They started off their spring season with a home double header against Hill College from Hillsboro, TX and achieved their first victory and their first loss. In the first game, Morgan Treaster, a freshman from Choctaw, OK., took the win and Chase Stevens, a freshman from Blanchard, OK., recorded the save. The Trojans won 4-1.
Hill College was ahead 1-0 going into the fourth inning but that’s all they could come up with. SSC slugged out 2 runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth to finish off the visiting Rebels.
The Trojans did not fair as well in the second game of the day. HC started off strong with 5 runs in the first inning and two in the second. SSC finally answered in the third with 2 runs and another six in the fourth, but Hill wasn’t finished. They scored four in the fourth also and another in the fifth inning. SSC had one more run in them that came in the seventh but it wasn’t enough. Hill College outscored SSC 12-9. Shane Broyles, a freshman from Burleson, TX. took the loss. Wayland Moore (McLoud, OK), Shane Bacon (Sand Springs, OK), and Derek Howell (Krum, TX) also pitched.
Homeruns were hit by Jonathan Clark (Norman, OK), Austin Rycroft (Edmond, OK), and Chad Colbert (Allen, OK). Two days later the Trojans traveled to Mt. Pleasant, TX to take on Northeast Texas Community College in a double header. Seminole brought home both wins 9-8, 11-7.
In the opening game the home team tried to stave off a defeat by batting out six runs in the sixth inning, but the Trojans’ early seven run lead was just too much. Stevens earned the win and Clark hit a homerun.
Seminole bats were strong in the second game that day, scoring in the each of the first six innings including four in the second. Rich Hawkins (Edmond, OK) was the winning pitcher and Jon Ervin (Seminole, OK) had the save. Cody Ferrell (McLoud, OK) slugged out his first homerun.
SSC was back in action on February 18th with a double header at Grayson Community College in Texas.
Shafer selected as Regional Coach of the Year
9/1/09 – MT. PLEASANT, Michigan
It was announced on August 20, that Seminole State Head Baseball Coach Jeff Shafer was selected as an American Baseball Coaches Association/Diamond Sports Company NJCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year. Shafer was one of ten NJCAA division I coaches from across the nation who were selected to receive this prestigious award. “Not only are we pleased with the recognition Coach Shafer and the baseball program has received for their accomplishments last season, but we are very proud of the classy, character-first manner in which the program is run,” said Athletic Director Dr. Thomas Mills. During the 2009 baseball season, the Trojans won the Region II Championship, the South Central District Championship, and participated in the NJCAA World Series. Shafer also had four players named to the Region II All-Tournament Team, three players named to the All-Region II Team, and eleven players who transferred to continue their playing careers at four year universities. “I'm very proud of the 2009 club for what they had to overcome to get to Grand Junction, it was a pleasure to coach these student-athletes,” commented Head Coach Jeff Shafer.
