Belles Lose Road Game

2/25/10 - SEMINOLE, OK

The second half at Carl Albert State College was just too tough for the SSC women’s basketball team.   After going into halftime tied at 35, the Belles didn’t have an answer for CASC’s 40 point blitz in the second.  The home team was up by only two points with about 10 minutes left, but SSC lost steam and scored only 18 points to lose the game 75-53.

“I think playing six conference games in 11 days finally caught up with us tonight.  We have to prepare for our first round game on Monday,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell.

Emily Lovell had a season high 19 points followed by Shillalie Jones, 7; Treleishia Prince, 6; Teshia Griswold, 6; Kim McVea, 6; Dani Wojciak, 4; Bobbie Marshall, 3; and Audrey Pernell, 2.

SSC’s final conference record is 9-9, and 13-15 overall. The Belles will enter the Region 2 tournament as the seventh seed and will compete on their home court against Arkansas Baptist (19-6), the 10th seed.  Game time is 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 1st.

Belles Take Last Home Game Win

2/23/10 - SEMINOLE, OK

The last home game of the season for the Seminole State College Belles turned out to be a positive experience.  Although SSC was down at halftime by 5, they came out ready to take over in the second.  They outscored Murray State College by 15 and won the game 79-69.

Teshia Griswold showed her consistency by again leading the Belles with 17 points.  Kyla Rollins had 10 rebounds.  Other scorers were:  Treleishia Prince, 15; Emily Lovell, 12; Shillalie Jones, 10; Kim McVea, 9; Audrey Pernell, 8; Rollins, 4; and Bobbie Marshall, 4.

“I was pleased with our second half effort.  I thought we did a good job defensively as a team.  We attacked the basket and got to the free throw line, which helped tremendously.  We have to stay focused and read for Carl Albert Thursday,” stated Assistant Coach Jeremy Ford.

The win takes the Belles’ record to 13-14 overall and 9-8 in the OCAC.  This puts them in a tie for fifth place going into Thursday’s game versus Carl Albert State College in Poteau, OK.  Another victory is needed to have sole possession of that fifth seed for the Region II tournament on March 4th in Shawnee, OK.

Belles Drop Homecoming Game

2/22/10 - SEMINOLE, OK

Seminole State College’s homecoming didn’t bode well for the women’s basketball team on Monday.  The Belles suffered a loss to Connors State College 84-72.  “We came out very slow and could not find the basket.  We made some unforced turnovers to start the game as well.  Connors capitalized on our mistakes and increased the lead.  We fought back hard but it was not enough,” stated Assistant Coach Jeremy Ford.

Leading the Belles was Teshia Griswold with 19 points followed by Shillalie Jones, 15; Bobbie Marshall, 11; Emily Lovell, 8; Audrey Pernell, 6; Treleishia Prince, 6; Dani Wojciak, 5; and Kyla Rollins, 2. Griswold also nabbed 7 rebounds.

Murray State College comes to town Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. for a make-up game and the last home game for SSC.  The Belles’ final regular season game will be Thursday at Carl Albert State College and then it is on to the Region II playoffs in Shawnee, OK on March 4th.

Belles Take a Win Over Western

2/20/10 - SEMINOLE, OK

It wasn’t much of a competition on Saturday when the Seminole State College Belles hosted Western OK State College.  SSC allowed only nine points from WOSC in the first half of play.  The Belles went into the locker room up 48-9 and finished with a lopsided victory 79-31. The shooting percentage was up for SSC including hitting 11 out of 22 threes.  Rebounding was also impressive with a total of 57, ten of those coming from Teshia Griswold who was also the high scorer with 22.

Other scoring came from Dani Wojciak, 11; Bobbie Marshall, 10; Audrey Pernell, 10; Sierra Barnhart, 9; Emily Lovell, 7; Shillalie Jones, 6; Treleishia Prince, 2; and Kyla Rollins, 2.

SSC’s record is now 8-7 in conference play and 12-13 overall.

“I thought we came out from the start with intensity and we played well. We still have some things to correct defensively as we prepare for Connors on Monday,” stated Assistant Coach Jeremy Ford.

The Belles host Connors State College on Monday, February 22 and then Murray State on Tuesday, February 23.  Both contests begin at 6:00 p.m.

Belles Lose on the Road

2/19/10 - TONKAWA, OK

Kyla Rollins had the best game of her career with 27 points and 17 rebounds but it was not enough to stave off Northern Oklahoma College’s barrage of shooters.  The Belles dropped the game 85-80. SSC had several chances to overtake NOC-Tonkawa, but the Mavericks seemed to have an answer each time. SSC was outscored in the first half 41-22 and made a concerted effort to make up lost ground in the second but there just wasn’t enough time.

“To compete in this league we have to play two solid halves of basketball. One half of good playing a game will not make us successful. We made a great effort to get back in the game, but we struggled too much with offense and defense in the first half,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell. The loss puts the Belles’ record at 11-13 overall and 8-6 in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference (OCAC).

Other scoring for the Belles came from: Treleishia Prince, 18; Shilallie Jones, 7; Dani Wojciak, 6; Bobbie Marshall, 5; Audrey Pernell, 5; Emily Lovell, 4; Teshia Griswold, 3; Sierra Barnhart, 3; Kim McVea, 2.  Prince, Wojciak, and Barnhart had three treys apiece.

The Belles play Saturday, February 20th at 6:00 p.m. in a make-up game against Western OK State College at Raymond Harber Fieldhouse on the campus of SSC.

Belles Struggle Against Tough Foe

2/16/10 - SEMINOLE, OK

The Seminole State College Belles basketball team had a tough battle on Monday when they hosted Northern OK College – Enid.  NOCE is currently in first place in the Bi-State Conference with only one loss overall.  SSC was down early and struggled to stay in the game.  However, they came out in the second half and put themselves back into the game cutting their opponent’s lead to nine with a couple of minutes left in the game.  “We came out sluggish without intensity and got behind early and could not answer back.  Enid played a good game and executed well.  We just have to regroup and prepare for Thursday,” stated Belles’ Assistant Coach Jeremy Ford.  SSC took the loss 73-85.

Treleishia Prince led the scoring with 22 points followed by Shallalie Jones, 13; Kyla Rollins, 12; Dani Wojciak, 9;, Fanta Toure, 5; Teshia Griswold, 5; Audrey, Pernell, 4; and Bobbie Marshall, 2. Toure and Rollins each had 7 rebounds.

“We built a comfortable lead in the first half with offensive and defensive rebounding but our intensity was not as strong in the second half,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell.

SSC Women Handle Eastern

2/1/10 - SEMINOLE, Oklahoma

After a closely played first half, the Belles of Seminole State College brought on their tough defense in the second to put away Eastern OK State College on Monday 71-58.  The Lady Mountaineers of EOSC tried to hang with the Belles by only being down 2 at halftime, 34-32.  But SSC was too much to handle for the remainder of the game and outscored their opponent by 11.  “This was a good road win.  Eastern is always a tough place to play.  We are playing with more confidence as a team on offense and defense,” stated Head Coach Rita Story-Schell.  The Belles’ record is now 10-11 which includes their conference record of 7-5.

Scorers for SSC were:  Teshia Griswold, 17; Trelishiea Prince, 11; Fanta Toure, 10; Shilallie Jones, 8; Kyla Rollins, 7; Emily Lovell, 7; Bobbie Marshall,6; Audrey Pernell, 5.

Seminole State Belles Defeat Carl Albert

1/25/10 - SEMINOLE, Oklahoma

After taking the lead at the start of the game, the Belles of SSC never looked back when they beat Carl Albert State College Thursday evening 75-67.  During the second half the Belles went on an 18-1 run against the Lady Vikings but CASC fought back making it a close game.  SSC had five players scoring in double digits.  “We had balanced scoring which makes a difference in any game,” stated Head Coach Rita Story-Schell.

The Belles were also impressive with their rebounding pulling down 47 with Fanta Toure having 16 boards.  Story-Schell added, “We had great teamwork tonight.  We concentrated on rebounds and movement of offense.”

“This was a great win.  NOC was undefeated in conference play at 5-0. We had several athletes make huge plays when we needed them.  I hope this gives us the confidence we need to finish strong in conference play,” stated Head Coach Rita Story-Schell.

SSC Belles Not Enough Second Time Around

12/7/09 - ARKANSAS CITY, Kansas

The last time Seminole State faced Cowley Community College, the Belles were shooting lights out and came away with a 32 point victory.  In their match up on Tuesday, SSC had a difficult time competing with Cowley. The Belles just did not have enough weapons to shut down the tough Tiger team. Cowley earned the win 70-59. “We knew it would be a tough game on the road,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell. “They are a very quick team and played a tough zone defense against us.  We shot more three's than usual but only made 9 out of 22.  We also still need to work harder on defense.”

Scoring Totals: Teisha Griswold, 15; Katie Sanderson, 14; Trelishiea Prince, 13; Sierra Barnhart, 6; Kim McVea, 3; Fanta Toure, 2; Audrey Purnell, 2; Shakyra Coleman, 2; Emily Lovell, 2

Belles Have Trouble Putting It Together

12/5/09 - SEMINOLE, Oklahoma

The Seminole State College Belles basketball team knew that their game against NEO on Sunday was going to be tough and that they were going to have to compete throughout the entire game if they wanted to pull away with the win. SSC kept fighting but could never muster enough of a comeback push over the edge and prevail. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M won the evening’s contest 70-56. “It was a disappointing loss to NEO tonight,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell. “We needed to be more consistent on offense and defense.  It’s frustrating that we didn't have enough intensity to win the last conference game before semester break.”

SSC had a tough time scoring, and although they had several open looks, they could not get the ball to fall. The Belles, however, were impressive at the free throw line as they went 24 of 32 on the night.

Scoring Totals: Trelishiea Prince, 16; Teshia Griswold, 10; Fanta Toure, 8; Katie Sanderson, 8; Shakyra Coleman, 8; Emily Lovell, 3; Audrey Purnell, 2; Sierra Barnhart, 1

Belles Handle Redlands
12/3/09 - SEMINOLE, Oklahoma

The Seminole State College Belles took on Redlands Community College on Thursday and came away with another conference win 72-62. “It was great shooting night for Bobbie Marshall,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell.  “She was 4 for 4 from the 3 point line.” Not only did Marshall have an impressive game behind the line, she had a solid all-around performance as she finished with 20 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals for the Belles.

“We did a great job rebounding as a team; we finished with 35 defensive and 16 offensive. We also did a better job handling the ball and finished the game with 17 turnovers,” said Coach Story-Schell. Fanta Toure was a rebounding machine as she pulled down 13 boards for the Belles.

The Belles move to 7-4 on the season and 3-0 in the conference. They are at home again on Sunday as they face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at 2:00 in another conference match-up.

Belles Earn Win at Western

12/1/09 - ALTUS, Oklahoma

The Seminole State College Belles basketball team picked up another conference win as they defeated Western Oklahoma State College 67-58. “It was a good conference win on the road but we are still making too many turnovers,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell. “We need to make better decisions on offense and stay focused on defense for 30 sec.” The Belles had an astounding 31 turnover on the night and allowed two Western players to score 23 points apiece. Luckily for SSC , the rest of the WOSC team only scored 12. Besides Teisha Griswold’s 19 points, the Belles scoring attack was well balanced and kept SSC atop WOSC despite the turnover troubles.

The Belles take on Redlands Community College at SSC on Thursday, December 3 at 6:00. They move to 2-0 in the conference and 6-4 overall.

Scoring leaders: Teisha Griswold, 19; Emily Lovell, 9; Fanta Toure, 8, Katie Sanderson, 8; Bobbie Marshall, 7; Kim McVea, 6, Trelishiea Prince, 5

Belles Win First Conference Game

11/23/09 - SEMINOLE, Oklahoma

The Seminole State College Belles were toe to toe with Eastern Oklahoma State College as they headed into the half up 40-38. It was a whole different story when the Belles came out after half.  SSC jumped out strong and started to pull away early in the half. “Eastern was fatigued in the second half so we tried to run the ball as much as possible,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell. The Belles’ plan worked as they continued the run to route Eastern 80-61. All ten of the Belles scored at least one point to aid in the SSC win. Freshman Teshia Griswold led the Belles offensive attack once again as she put in 18 points on the night.

“Tonight was a great way to start the conference season. Our team is gaining confidence in each game we play,” said Coach Story-Schell.

Belles Lose Despite Comeback Effort

11/7/09 - SEMINOLE, Oklahoma

The Seminole State College Belles basketball team jumped out to a fast 7-1 lead, but Independence stormed back and quickly gained control after their slow start. Despite the early 6 point lead, the Belles shooting was cold compared to their usual hot hand and the Pirates were on fire leaving SSC down by 11 entering the half. In the second half, the Belles began to make a run at about the 11 minute mark. SSC finally took the lead with four minutes left but Independence stayed strong and eventually held on to win the game 89-85 to hand the Belles their first loss. “We played hard but we need to cut down on our turnovers,” said Head Coach Rita Story-Schell. “We made several mistakes in the second half that could have been the difference of the game. Despite this I was pleased with the comeback after being down by 11.” Teisha Griswold had another big night for the Belles as she lead all scorers with 22 and shot 90% from the field. Audrey Pernell was also impressive putting up 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

SSC Scoring Totals: Teshia Griswold, 22; Audrey Pernell, 17; Shillalie Jones, 15; Emily Lovell, 11; Fanta Toure, 10; Sierra Barnhart, 5; Bobbie Marshall, 3; Kim McVea, 2.

Belles Dominant Again

11/5/09 - SEMINOLE, Oklahoma

The Seminole State College Belles basketball team entered Thursday’s game expecting a tough battle as they took on Cowley College. However, the Belles may have underestimated their abilities and talent level as they stole the easy 94-62 win.  Cowley tried to mount a comeback in the second half but the Belles Teshia Griswold was just too much. Griswold was striking once again as she led all scorers with 26 points and rebounders with 14. But this win came down to another team effort. “Our teamwork was great tonight. We had balanced scoring and 19 assists,” commented Head Coach Rita Story-Schell. Four Belles scored double digits in the contest. Shillalie Jones followed Griswold putting in 18 points, Fanta Toure scored 14, and Trelishiea Prince added 10. Not only was Jones putting up buckets, but she was also dishing the ball out with 6 assists throughout the evening. Bobbie Marshall also added 6.

Scoring Totals: Teshia Griswold, 26; Shillalie Jones, 18; Fanta Toure, 14; Trelishiea Prince, 10; Bobbie Marshall, 6; Maddison Kinsey, 6; Sierra Barnhart, 5; Shakyra Coleman, 3; Katie Sanderson, 3; Kim McVea, 2; Audrey Pernell, 1.
