9/28/09 Trojan Golf Updates
The Seminole State golf team traveled to McPherson, KS for their first tournament of the year. The women had a strong showing finishing second out of four beating the other two junior colleges in the field. The women finished with team totals of 371, 371 for both days of the tournament. “The girls played very well on a fairly long course,” commented Head Coach Nathan Jahn. “Lizi Sweetnam carried over her strong play from last year with scores of 82, 84 finishing second out of 29 competitors.” Freshman Shelby Martin finished ninth tied with sophomore Courtney Underhill with a two day total of 188. Sophomore Jacey Ford finished 15th with a 2-day total of 200 and sophomore Amber Smallwood finished 16th with a 216. “After finishing 12th in the nation last year, we are looking to improve on that and send 3 or 4 girls to Nationals this year.”
The women traveled to Winfield, KS for their second tournament of the year. The girls again finished with a strong showing placing third out of eight teams shooting 390, 367. They also beat all other junior colleges in the field. “I was impressed with our second day round moving us up from fourth to third making up 11 shots,” explained Head Coach Nathan Jahn. “It is an encouraging sign seeing the girls improving on their rounds the second day.” Lizi Sweetnam continued her strong play finishing second out of 50 competitors. She shot 90,83 finishing three shots out of first. Courtney Underhill finished 95,92 placing 11th overall. Shelby Martin played well in her second college golf tournament placing 21st with rounds of 100, 96. Also, Jacey Ford finished 35th and Amber Smallwood finished 36th. The next competition will be in Tyler, TX October 26th-27th.
