SSC Women Win Two of Three
03/08/2010
The Seminole State College Lady Trojans tennis team won two out of their three dual matches over the weekend by beating Laredo Community College of Texas 8-1, and Eastfield College of Texas 9-0. The loss came to NJCAA #7 team Temple Junior College.
On Friday, SSC was defeated by home team Temple Junior College by a score of 7-2. Temple was too much to handle for the Lady Trojans. Highlights came from the #3 doubles pair of Joanna Torres and Christina Lebarre, where they won easily 8-2. Jade Cunningham picked up the only other win for SSC, defeating TCC’s #6 single in straight sets. Number one singles player Natalia Khakimova took her opponent to three sets, but lost a tough one 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
On Saturday, the Lady Trojans defeated the NJCAA #11 team of Laredo Community College, 8-1. The only loss came at #2 singles, where Diana Lozano went down 6-0, 6-1. SSC took a commanding lead by sweeping all three doubles matches heading into singles play. LCC could never recover.
“This was a good trip for us to see where we compare with other strong NCJAA teams. The weather was good, and we got in some good match play. I think we could have played a bit better against Temple, but we will play them again in a few weeks so we plan to do better. I was very proud of how the ladies came out and played against Laredo. They beat a pretty good team handily, and it was good to see the focus after losing to Temple,” stated Head Coach Brian Nelson.
On Sunday, SSC hosted Eastfield College from Mesquite, TX and won easily 9-0 which puts their overall record at 5-2.
Next up is a home match against Collin County Community College on Friday, March 12th, at 12 noon.
Trojan Women Have Tough Time at ITA Regional
10/8/09 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma
The Seminole State Women’s Tennis team had a troubled time at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament. That started with both of their #1 and #2 girls having injuries. Kristina Pakhomenko was not even able to enter the tournament. Natalia Khakimova was able to play although she was playing with an injured ankle. Despite the injury to Khakimova, she was able to fight into the quarterfinals and pushed a tight match that she lost in a third set tie-breaker. The only other players winning games in women’s singles were Joanna Torres and Morgan Chissoe who both had first round wins. “I still believe overall we can beat all the teams at the tourney head to head in a dual match,” said Head Coach Brian Nelson. “So I’m greatly looking forward to the spring semester and playing each of them in duals.”
