Work of Volunteers Key to GEAR UP Success

August 15, 2012 – The Seminole State College Men’s Basketball team helped the GEAR UP staff add school supplies to book bags to be taken to 8th graders at the program’s 15 participating schools. And, the SSC Softball team took an afternoon off the field to help the staff prepare for the distribution of 500 TI-84 Graphing Calculators to the partner-school teachers.

A component of the GEAR UP legislation enacted in 1988 includes the requirement that partnership grants obtain the help of volunteers and donors to match funds supplied through the Department of Education. In this case, the players’ volunteer work not only helps the staff in saving their time for other work, but documents volunteer efforts important to the program’s ability to use Federal funds in helping the students succeed and meet their goals.

The supplies the basketball team included in the book bags were purchased through a donation by VF Jeanswear – commonly known as Wrangler in Seminole.
