SSC GEAR UP Planning Summer Activities July 6-9

Grant from image searchApril 15, 2015 – Presentations by Grant Baldwin will be included in a four-day schedule of daytime activities for GEAR UP students as the project offers a non-residential camp July 6-9 at the SSC campus.

Since limited space is available and to allow planning for transportation needs, GEAR UP students are required to complete an application committing to the four days of attendance and return the applications to an Advisor or the GEAR UP offices by May 8. The application form is available as a printable file below or by contacting an SSC GEAR UP Advisor.

The Advisors are designing a short week of activities as a mid-summer opportunity for learning with some fun mixed in. In addition to Baldwin’s presentations, the tentative four-day schedule may also include a service learning component, some engineering and physical science with SSC Associate Professor Jarrod Tollett, presentations on leadership and achievement by Baldwin and discussions and mentoring from a panel of recent college graduates.

Baldwin first became acquainted with the GEAR UP students at assemblies arranged by the project last fall. A speaker and author, Baldwin has traveled throughout the United States making presentations to more than a quarter-million students at conferences, school assemblies and other youth events on a variety of topics including leadership, motivation and planning for college.

Tollett has been an instructor in the Math, Science and Engineering Division at Seminole State since the mid-2000s. He currently teaches most of the college’s courses in engineering, astronomy, physics and calculus. He also directs the college’s summer academy “Peek Into Engineering.” After completing his graduate work at the University of Oklahoma, he initially began work at SSC in a previous GEAR UP grant project.

The GEAR UP staff is evaluating possible transportation needs for students from partner schools near their homes. After completing the logistical arrangements, the staff hopes to develop a morning bus pick-up and evening return of students who may not have their own transportation to the college campus.

The camp application form can be printed here or obtained by contacting a GEAR UP Advisor by email or phone.
