SSC Hosts Speech and Debate Tournament

The Seminole State College Trojan Speech and Debate Tournament welcomed 16 area high schools to the SSC campus on January 24 and 25 to an Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association qualifying tournament. The tournament was held under the supervision of Assistant Professor of Speech John Bolander.

Assistant Professor of English Yasminda Choate, SSC student Connor Buchanan, Assistant Professor of Speech John Bolander, Assistant Professor of English Dr. Andrew Davis and Communications Coordinator Josh Hutton were among the faculty, staff and students that helped the College host a speech and debate tournament January 24 and 25.

More than 200 students, competing in 3 divisions which included Class 3A, 4A and Champs, attended the tournament. Tournament trophies and medals were provided by the Whitten Newman Family Foundation, Security State Bank and Gilbert Insurance Agency.

Funds raised by the tournament go directly to scholarships for Speech, Art, and English students attending Seminole State College.

“Congratulations to the winners and competitors and a special thank you to our local Seminole State College administration and faculty for helping judge the 13 speech and debate events,” Bolander said.

Vice President for Fiscal Affairs Tony Crouch, Social Science Division Chair Dr. Steve Bolin, Associate Professor of Psychology Christal Knowles, Assistant Professor of English Dr. Andrew Davis, Associate Professor Kelly McBride, Assistant Professor of English Yasminda Choate, Communications Coordinator Josh Hutton and SSC student Connor Buchanan helped judge, organize and support the efforts to bring students to the tournament at SSC.
