{"id":1070,"date":"2019-02-14T10:39:16","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T16:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/?p=1070"},"modified":"2019-02-14T10:39:17","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T16:39:17","slug":"additional-groups-pass-resolutions-supporting-ssc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/additional-groups-pass-resolutions-supporting-ssc\/","title":{"rendered":"Additional Groups Pass Resolutions Supporting SSC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three organizations have joined the Seminole Chamber of Commerce and the Seminole State College Board of Regents in passing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/Regents\/2019\/Resolutions.pdf\">resolutions supporting local governance<\/a> of the College.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<p>On Monday evening, the Seminole\nSchool Board passed a resolution stating that, \u201cWhereas local board control was\nsanctioned by the Oklahoma Legislature and has been in place since the\ncollege\u2019s separation from the high school (in 1969) \u2026 be it resolved that the\nBoard of Education of Seminole Public Schools hereby collectively and unanimously\nendorse efforts to retain local control of Seminole State College through the\nexisting structure of its Board of Regents.\u201d&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The declaration was\nsigned by School Board members Claudia Willis, President; Marci Donaho, Vice\nPresident; Linda Hampton, Clerk; Shevlyn Foutz, Member; Lisa Cobb, Member; and\nSuperintendent Alfred Gaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seminole City Council\nalso addressed the issue at their Tuesday evening meeting and passed a\nresolution supporting efforts to retain governance of SSC through a local Board\nof Regents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution cited the\nCity\u2019s long support of the College since its inception in 1931, and referred to\ncommunity efforts to \u201csave the college from extinction in 1969 by donating land\nfor the campus and passing a sales tax to support the college.\u201d&nbsp; The resolution continued, \u201c\u2026the City of Seminole\nand Seminole State College historically have a strong relationship and have\nestablished many partnerships for the betterment of our citizens and the\ncommunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City Council members\npresent for the unanimous vote on Tuesday were:&nbsp;\nVice Mayor Bill Wantland; D.D. Patterson, Tim Poplin, Cory Crabtree,\nJohn Cramer, Chris Anson and Larry Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seminole State College\nPresident Lana Reynolds spoke to the Council and expressed appreciation to City\nManager Steve Saxon for leading a community effort over the past year to defend\nagainst recommendations of the Oklahoma Task Force on Higher Education to\ndissolve governing boards and require several rural Oklahoma community colleges\nto merge with four-year institutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe are appreciative of the strong support the College has received from the community.\u00a0 It is clear that the leaders of these organizations believe Seminole State College is their college and feel that local control and operating independently is critical to our mission of serving our students and the community.\u201d <\/p><cite><strong>SSC President Lana Reynolds<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>An additional resolution\nwas passed by the SSC Educational Foundation on Wednesday morning.&nbsp; According to the organization\u2019s bylaws, the\nFoundation was established in 1972 with the purpose of stimulating and\ncultivating voluntary financial support to benefit the College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Foundation has and\nwill continue to support the growth and advancement of the College in order to\nprovide quality academic, athletic and leadership opportunities to area\nstudents, and\u2026 the Foundation understands the importance of maintaining local\ngovernance of the College in order to better serve Seminole and surrounding\ncommunities,\u201d the resolution stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation\u2019s resolution was signed by Chair Lance Wortham.\u00a0 Trustees of the Foundation present for the unanimous vote of the resolution supporting continued local control of the College were:\u00a0 Wortham; Vice Chair Doug Humphreys; Vice Chair Jeramy Rich, Chairman Rocky Barrett; Brooke Case; Dr. Vickie Carter; Steve Degraffenreid; Jay Estes; Rick Geist; Keith Grissom; Jim Hardin; John Hargrave; Tim Mathews; Gordon Melson; Chris Moore; Carl Packwood; Kenny Pryor; Mark Schell; Jack Sherry; Roy Sisco; Sue Snodgrass; Bob Swearingen; Andy Tucker; and David Wilson.
