\u201cYou get in the truck. You hear the sirens. Cars are getting out of the way,\u201d Randi Bray said, describing one of the first times she responded to a call for the Wetumka Fire Department. \u201cIt\u2019s a kind of scary that forces you to focus, to be aware, and try your hardest to help those in need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Bray,\na Seminole State College sophomore set to finish her associate\u2019s degree in\nElementary Education in the fall, became the first woman to ever join the\nWetumka Fire Department last year. The Wetumka Fire Department is\nvolunteer-based and includes 17 other members. They attend training sessions\nonce per month. Bray said the department responded to approximately 40 calls\nlast year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been a fire bug,\u201d Bray said. \u201cMy dad has served on the Wetumka Fire Department for 25 years. When I was little, I was fascinated by the truck, by the gear. I wanted to be like him.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Community\nis important to Bray. She chose SSC to remain close to her hometown, where she\nalso lends a hand with the Wetumka High School FFA program when she can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\nlove that the College is a big family. I know if I get a flat tire, somebody\u2019s\ngoing to help me,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond\nher commitment to community, Bray recently picked up writing poetry. She said\nshe was never the strongest English student, nor did she care to be until she\ntook a composition course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor the first time, an instructor wanted to know how I felt, how the class felt, about certain topics. I felt heard, and I began to enjoy reading and responding to the assignments,\u201d she said. \u201cI was pushed to be my best.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Her\nhard work paid off when a poem she wrote in class was published in the Fall\n2018 edition of the Oklahoma English Journal, curated by the Oklahoma Council\nof Teachers of English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon\ncompletion of her associate\u2019s degree, Bray plans to attend East Central\nUniversity in Ada or Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. She would like to\nteach students from kindergarten to third grade and eventually pursue her\nmaster\u2019s degree in counseling.\n\n\u201cAfter that, my big dream is to, you know, be the\nState Superintendent. We\u2019ll see how that goes, but I\u2019d love to help reshape\neducation in Oklahoma.\u201d\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
