The Seminole State College Help Center, in partnership with the Children\u2019s Hospital Foundation, will sponsor two free screenings of the documentary \u201cResilience: the Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope\u201d on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Enoch Kelly Haney Center lecture hall. Both showings are open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dr. Amy Treat, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pediatrics, Center for Child Abuse and Neglect at the University of Oklahoma, will hold a question-and-answer session following the screening of \u201cResilience: the Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope\u201d on Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Enoch Kelly Haney Center lecture hall.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cResilience\u201d\nexplores how abuse, neglect, and toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak\nhavoc on the brains and bodies of children, leading to lasting ramifications\ninto adulthood. These ramifications may include a greater risk for disease,\nhomelessness, prison time and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty\nworsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. \u201cResilience\u201d also covers a\nmovement that is determined to create public awareness and overcome these\nissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            A\nquestion-and-answer session will take place following the 6:30 p.m. showing\nwith Dr. Amy Treat. Treat is a postdoctoral\nfellow in the Department of Pediatrics, Center for Child Abuse and Neglect at\nthe University of Oklahoma. She received her Ph.D. in Human Development and\nFamily Science at Oklahoma State University. Her research focuses on the\nintergenerational transmission of Adverse Childhood Experiences, parenting and\nchildren\u2019s developmental outcomes. She is currently studying how early\nadversity impacts the body’s stress response system and how positive parenting\nand social support can buffer against maladaptive outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The\nSSC Help Center was recently established to provide support and information in\nmany areas, including mental health, counseling referrals, safety, academic\nsuccess, resume writing, career planning, student organizations, scholarships\nand campus activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The\nChildren\u2019s Hospital Foundation\u2019s mission is to improve the health of children\nthrough its support of research, education and clinical care at the Oklahoma\nHealth Center. Through endowments and direct support, they are able to recruit\nand retain nationally recognized pediatric physician-scientists to direct\nresearch, treat patients and train medical students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
