{"id":1816,"date":"2020-03-04T14:20:09","date_gmt":"2020-03-04T20:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/?p=1816"},"modified":"2020-03-04T14:22:30","modified_gmt":"2020-03-04T20:22:30","slug":"ssc-student-named-newman-civic-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/ssc-student-named-newman-civic-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"SSC Student Named Newman Civic Fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced that Seminole State College\u2019s Tijah Johnson, a sophomore studying Health Sciences, will be one of the 290 students who will make up the organization\u2019s 2020-2021 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. <!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Newman\nCivic Fellowship is a yearlong program for students from Campus Compact member\ninstitutions. The students selected for the fellowship are leaders on their\ncampuses who demonstrate a commitment to finding solutions for challenges\nfacing communities locally, nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Tijah_Johnson.jpg?fit=768%2C1024\" alt=\"Tijah Johnson\" class=\"wp-image-1817\" width=\"580\" height=\"773\"\/><figcaption><em>Seminole State College sophomore Tijah Johnson, of Shawnee, was recently honored as a 2020-2021 Newman Civic Fellow. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson, of\nShawnee, serves as the SSC Student Government Association President. As a\ncampus leader, she has participated in many events, including representing the\nCollege at Higher Ed Day at the State Capitol and state-wide Student Government\nCongresses. She served as a speaker at the \u201cWomen in STEM\u201d campus event. She\nhas also played a role in the planning, organizing and opening of the campus\nFood Pantry and Help Center, a resource that provides support to students\nfacing mental health issues, seeking counseling referrals or in need of\nguidance on their academic careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTijah\u2019s help\nwith the Food Pantry and the Help Center has been instrumental in helping our\nstudent body as a whole,\u201d SSC President Lana Reynolds said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson discovered her passion for ending food insecurity while serving as the Student Government Association President.<br> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI began to understand the effects of income inequality and how it is a battle for families to provide basic needs and how the bonds of the family relationship suffer as well,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cI am an advocate for each student on campus and strive to make sure their voices are heard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fellowship\nis named for the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact\u2019s founders, who was\nan advocate for civic engagement in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the\nfellowship, Campus Compact provides the students with a variety of learning and\nnetworking opportunities that emphasize personal, professional and civic\ngrowth. Each year, Fellows are invited to a national, in-person conference of\nNewman Civic Fellows and participate in numerous virtual training and\nnetworking opportunities. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to\napply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are proud\nto recognize each of these extraordinary student leaders and thrilled to have\nthe opportunity to engage with them,\u201d Campus Compact President Andrew Seligsohn\nsaid. \u201cThe stories of this year&#8217;s Newman Civic Fellows make clear that they are\ncommitted to finding solutions to pressing problems in their communities and\nbeyond.
