Gill Scholarship Foundation are honoring the memory, legacy and wishes of long-time Seminole educator and community volunteer Don Gill by expanding and revitalizing a scholarship program he established to support high school students who plan to attend Seminole State College.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Don-Gill.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1821\" width=\"236\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Don-Gill.jpg 521w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Don-Gill-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Don-Gill-34x50.jpg 34w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Don-Gill-500x737.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><figcaption>Don Gill<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For many years Gill\u2019s personal Foundation provided scholarships to five students to help offset costs of attending Seminole State College. Following his death in October 2018, the Foundation Board has been working to preserve his wishes and to help more deserving students. Shelly Trammell, Jonna Bunyan, Cynthia Yerby, Janelle Zehren and Linda Dearing, all of Seminole, are hoping to increase awareness of the Gill Foundation Scholarship and are partnering with Seminole State College to reach more potential applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The College has\nextended its scholarship application deadline for this special scholarship to\nApril 15, 2020. The application form may be found at www.sscok.edu on the Financial\nAid Scholarship page and can be returned by email to finaid@sscok.edu, or in\nperson, at the Financial Aid Office in the Walkingstick Student Center on\ncampus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group plans\nto award 10 scholarships valued at $2,400 over four semesters to high school seniors\nin Seminole County this spring who will be attending SSC. Students must have a\nfinancial need, must earn their high school diploma or an equivalent, must be\nenrolled full-time at SSC, and must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.\nThe scholarship is designed to assist non-athletes in their academic pursuits.\nProof of enrollment and GPA will be evaluated each subsequent semester after\nthe original award is presented in order to qualify for continuation of the\nscholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to\ncompleting the Gill Foundation Scholarship Application, interested students\nmust submit a one-to-two page essay expressing why they feel they should be\nchosen, as well as their collegiate goals and aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gill came to\nSeminole in 1969 along with former Seminole \u201cJunior\u201d College President Elmer\nTanner and several other professors from Claremore. They made up the original\nfaculty of the College as it separated from Seminole High School. He served as\nDean of Students from 1969 to 1983 and taught speech in the Language Arts and\nHumanities Division until his retirement in 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seminole State\nCollege honored Gill with its Distinguished Service Award in 2014 for his\nlongtime support of the College and his commitment to students of the\ninstitution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gill was a member\nof the Rotary Club, past president of the Seminole Elks and a devout elder in\nthe Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Maple Grove Chapel Association\ndoing preservation work in the city cemetery. For over 30 years he helped\norganize and operate the Interfaith Social Ministries programs and the local\nSeminole Food Bank. For many years Don was the driving force behind the Rotary\nClub\u2019s annual Christmas dinner. He was on the board of the Jasmine Moran\nChildren\u2019s Museum. In recognition of his volunteerism, he was awarded the\nSeminole Chamber Commerce\u2019s \u201cCommunity Service Award,\u201d and in January of 2019,\nhe was posthumously awarded the 2018 \u201cCitizen of the Year.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more\ninformation, contact the SSC Financial Aid office at 405-382-9247 or email\nfinaid@sscok.edu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five local Board Members of the Donald E.
