{"id":2237,"date":"2020-12-07T12:06:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-07T18:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/?p=2237"},"modified":"2020-12-11T12:10:56","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T18:10:56","slug":"ssc-life-sciences-professor-to-retire-at-the-end-of-the-semester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/ssc-life-sciences-professor-to-retire-at-the-end-of-the-semester\/","title":{"rendered":"SSC Life Sciences Professor to Retire at the End of the Semester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seminole State College Assistant Professor of Life Sciences Susan Walker will retire at the conclusion of the fall semester.<\/p>\n<p>Walker first began working at the College as an adjunct in 2007 and took on a full-time role in 2014.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p>She received her bachelor\u2019s degree in Biology and Health Physical Education and Recreation at East Central University in 1980. She went on to complete her master\u2019s of science in Curriculum and Instruction in Education with Science Emphasis in 1994 at Oklahoma State University. She also received a master\u2019s of science in Biomedical Sciences \u2013 Parasitology in 2004 at OSU.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to her work at SSC, she was a teacher at Maud Public Schools and Animal Laboratory Technician in Langston. Walker brought her teaching expertise and hands-on experience with animal care to the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"955\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Susan-Walker-1024x955.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Susan-Walker-1024x955.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Susan-Walker-300x280.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Susan-Walker-768x716.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Susan-Walker-1536x1433.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Susan-Walker-50x47.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Susan-Walker-788x735.jpg 788w, https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Susan-Walker.jpg 2022w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>SSC Assistant Professor of Life Sciences Susan Walker will retire at the end of the Fall semester after six years at the College.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been a great pleasure to work alongside individuals in the STEM department, and I will always appreciate the chance I was given six years ago to teach the two subjects I have a passion for &#8211; microbiology and biology,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Walker said the last year teaching has been particularly challenging, adapting to online science labs and ensuring student safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, she still found encouragement in the determination and successes of her students.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>STEM Division Chair Jason Cook said Walker\u2019s contribution to the College has been inspiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cSusan Walker is an excellent instructor and has been a great asset to the college during her tenure here. She has a strong work ethic and willingness to put in the effort needed to provide a broad microbiology background for her students. Her modesty about her abilities belies a wealth of knowledge that allows her to teach her students about the practical side of lab science. Her skills have provided thousands of students the resources needed to be successful in the real world of lab science. I am going to miss her quiet competence and amazing baking skills. It has been a privilege to work alongside and learn from her,\u201d Cook said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Health Sciences Division Chair and STEM faculty colleague Dr. Noble Jobe complimented the legacy Walker has created.<br>\u201cHer steadfast dedication to this institution and its students can be seen through the legacy she is leaving, providing excellent and modern facilities for her successor,\u201d Dr. Jobe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Once she retires, Walker is looking forward to spending time with her family on their farm southwest of Konawa, completing home projects and taking more hiking trips.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seminole State College Assistant Professor of Life Sciences Susan Walker will retire at the conclusion of the fall semester.
