{"id":464,"date":"2018-03-16T12:55:39","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T18:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/?p=464"},"modified":"2019-01-09T10:25:03","modified_gmt":"2019-01-09T16:25:03","slug":"ssc-student-support-programs-host-first-to-finish-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/ssc-student-support-programs-host-first-to-finish-panel\/","title":{"rendered":"SSC Student Support Programs Host First to Finish Panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"caption\">The Seminole State College Student Support Services Programs recently hosted a \u201cFirst to Finish\u201d event on campus featuring a panel of three individuals, all first in their family to graduate from college.<\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">During the program, the three panelists shared their personal experiences as first-generation college students by answering a series of questions. They discussed fear and other obstacles encountered during their college journeys and how they were able to overcome those barriers. Panelists also discussed the importance of setting and achieving goals along the path to completing a college degree. Audience members also had the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_465\" style=\"width: 568px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/FirsttoFinish20181-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-465\" class=\"wp-image-465 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.sscok.edu\/media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/FirsttoFinish20181-1-768x549.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>SSC graduate and panelist Lynnette Gomez answers a question during the \u201cFirst to Finish\u201d first-generation college student panel discussion hosted at Seminole State College this week. Other panelists pictured are (l-r) Kelly Hankel and Edie Cathey.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"caption\">\nThose on the panel included Kelly Hankel, Edie Cathey and Lynnette Gomez. Hankel serves at SSC\/Gordon Cooper Technology Center as a medical laboratory technician assistant professor. She holds a bachelor\u2019s in medical laboratory science and a master\u2019s in business administration. Cathey is a financial assistance specialist at SSC and holds a bachelor\u2019s in business and computer information systems. She is pursuing a master\u2019s in education. Gomez is a mathematics instructor at SSC. She holds a bachelor\u2019s in biology and is working on her master\u2019s in higher education administration.<br \/>\nJanna Manlapig, Director of Student Support Services at SSC, said, \u201cIt is our hope that by having panel discussions with successful first-generation college students, individuals in similar situations will be encouraged and see that it is possible to earn a college degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">Student Support Services and STEM Student Support Services are federally-funded grants hosted by Seminole State College.\u00a0 Both grants serve students who qualify within the federal guidelines.\u00a0 It is the goal of these programs to increase graduation and transfer rates of economically disadvantaged students, low-income students, first-generation college students and college students with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to apply, please contact Janna Manlapig by phone at 382-9642 or by email at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:j.manlapig@sscok.edu\">j.manlapig@sscok.edu<\/a>.
