<\/figure>\n\n\n\n1. You can earn college credit at no cost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Eligible Oklahoma high school seniors can receive a state tuition waiver for up to 18 credit hours during the academic year, while juniors can receive a waiver for up to nine credit hours, subject to state funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SSC takes those savings a step further. Eligible students attending high school in Seminole, Pottawatomie, Hughes, Okfuskee or Lincoln counties automatically receive an SSC scholarship covering fees and textbooks after qualifying for the state tuition waiver. Homeschooled students who reside in one of the five counties are also eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That means qualifying students can complete college courses without paying tuition, fees or textbook costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. You can shorten the path to a degree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Every college course completed in high school can move a student closer to earning a certificate or degree. A student who completes 18 credit hours has already finished the equivalent of a full-time college semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education<\/a> identifies reduced college costs and a shorter time to degree as two of the primary benefits of concurrent enrollment. During the most recent academic year reported, more than 20,700 Oklahoma high school students completed over 193,000 college credit hours through concurrent enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Students should work with their high school counselor, an SSC advisor and their intended transfer institution to select courses that fit their academic plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n State and national data show that students who participate in concurrent enrollment are more likely to complete college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the State Regents\u2019 2023-24 Concurrent Enrollment Annual Report<\/a>, Oklahoma students with prior concurrent enrollment graduated at higher rates than students without concurrent experience across every level of the state system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At community colleges, 47.3% of students with prior concurrent enrollment earned a credential within three years, compared with 24.6% of students without prior concurrent credit. At regional universities, the six-year graduation rates were 56.5% and 31.6%, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nationally, the Community College Research Center at Columbia University<\/a> found that 50% of former dual enrollment students who entered college immediately after high school earned a credential within four years. The rate was 44% among students who began college without prior dual enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While these comparisons do not prove that concurrent enrollment alone caused the difference, they show a strong connection between earning college credit in high school and later college success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Concurrent enrollment gives students an opportunity to experience college-level expectations while they still have the support of their families, high school counselors and teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Students learn how to manage college assignments, communicate with instructors and take greater responsibility for their education. Successfully completing a course can also reassure students that they are capable of handling college work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The What Works Clearinghouse of the U.S. Department of Education<\/a> found strong evidence that dual enrollment programs have positive effects on college access and enrollment, college credit accumulation, degree attainment, high school completion and high school academic achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beginning college can feel like a major leap. Concurrent enrollment allows students to make that transition one or two courses at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time concurrent students graduate from high school, they may already understand how college classes operate, have credits recorded on an official college transcript and know how to use college resources. Students who continue at SSC also begin their first full semester with an established connection to the College and its advisors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n New concurrent students should begin by speaking with their high school counselor. Students must complete SSC\u2019s online application for admission, meet admission and college-readiness requirements, and submit a concurrent enrollment form, official high school transcript and test scores.
