Seminole State College\u2019s Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions program will host seven-time Olympic medalist, ovarian cancer survivor and health advocate Shannon Miller at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, in the Jeff Johnston Fine Arts Auditorium on the SSC campus. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentation will serve as a culminating event for the final year of SSC\u2019s current five-year NASNTI grant. The program\u2019s 2026 theme, \u201cWellbeing and Resilience,\u201d focuses on providing students with resources and strategies to support their personal well-being and academic success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Miller\u2019s presentation, audience members will have an opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session and photo opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Miller won seven Olympic medals during her gymnastics career. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, she earned five medals \u2014 two silver and three bronze \u2014 the most won by a U.S. athlete in any sport at those Games. Four years later, she helped lead the U.S. women\u2019s gymnastics team, known as the \u201cMagnificent Seven,\u201d to its first Olympic team gold medal. She also won an individual gold medal on the balance beam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her competitive career, Miller earned 59 international and 49 national medals, including nine world championship medals. She became the first U.S. gymnast to win consecutive world all-around titles, earning the championships in 1993 and 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After retiring from Olympic competition, Miller earned undergraduate degrees in marketing and entrepreneurship from the University of Houston and a law degree from Boston College. She has remained involved in gymnastics and the Olympic movement as an analyst and commentator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2011, Miller was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She underwent surgery to remove a baseball-sized tumor, followed by chemotherapy. She remains cancer-free and advocates for early detection, health awareness, cancer research and survivorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miller is the founder and CEO of Salto Health, a platform that connects cancer survivors with products and services they may need during treatment and recovery. The platform allows survivors to create personalized registries through which family members and friends can provide practical support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SSC\u2019s NASNTI program was awarded a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education funded at $450,000 annually. During the grant period, the program has expanded computer science instruction, supported the development of esports programming, improved accessibility for students with disabilities and offered activities focused on academic success, cultural awareness, well-being and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
