The Seminole State College Business and Industry program will host a poetry writing workshop led by published author Paul Juhasz on April 20 on SSC’s campus.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 101 of Tanner Hall. The cost to enroll in the workshop is $49.

Students from 28 schools across the state competed in Seminole State College’s 50th annual Interscholastic Meet on March 28. Nearly 600 students attended the event.
Individual entries were separated into two divisions. Division I was composed of students from schools classified as 3A, 4A and 5A. Students from 2A and A class schools competed in Division II.
Exams were administered to students in 12 different subject areas during morning and early-afternoon testing sessions. Four art categories were offered as well: sculpture, painting, drawing and best in show. The top three winners within each subject were awarded medals.
A trophy was awarded to the top school in each division based on accumulation of points and medal placing. Preston High School was the Division I Sweepstakes Champion. This year the runner-up was Morris High School. In Division II, Paden High School was the Sweepstakes Champion, and Bowlegs High School clinched runner-up.

Two Seminole State College students and three area high school seniors were recognized at the All-Oklahoma Academic Team and Oklahoma Association of Community Colleges Presidents’ Tuition Waiver Awards Ceremony on March 26 at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
SSC students Benjamin Parker, of Shawnee, and Ryan Carlisle, of Foss, were named to the All-Oklahoma Academic Team. Prague High School student Ethan Rich, Bowlegs High School student Dillon Sullivan and Seminole High School student Hannah Upchurch were recipients of the OACC President’s Tuition Waiver.

Seminole State College nursing students got a hands-on experience in disaster response on Feb. 28 at the softball field parking lot on campus. Nursing students worked alongside local agencies to respond to a simulated school bus wreck.
The scenario was designed to test the students’ ability to assess the situation and work alongside other first responders to triage and treat patients. The students acted as nurses, while volunteers played the roles of injured bus passengers.

Seminole State College will host a meet and greet event for students interested in enrolling in the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program on Feb. 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Gordon Cooper Technology Center campus in Shawnee.
At the meet and greet, prospective students will have the opportunity to meet faculty and graduates, explore the field of physical therapy, learn about job opportunities, received in-depth information on the program’s degree plan and learn about how to pay for the program.

Seminole State College Professor of Government Jeffrey Christiansen speaks to students, faculty, staff and community members at an event honoring Presidents’ Day at the College on February 16 in the Utterback Ballroom. This year’s presentation was titled “Dwight D. Eisenhower: Solider and Statesman,” and focused on the 34th president’s early life, military service during the Second World War and his time in the Oval Office.
December 2023 graduates of the Seminole State College nursing program recently achieved a 100 percent pass rate on their National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
The NCLEX is an exam used to determine if recently graduated nursing students are safe to practice. Nurses are required to pass the NCLEX to earn licensure and legally practice nursing. In 2022, the Oklahoma Board of Nursing reported that the average pass rate of the NCLEX in the state was 78.67 percent, while the national average was 79.93 percent.
“We are so proud of the hard work and determination of these students,” SSC President Lana Reynolds said. “Our nursing faculty equip our graduates with the knowledge, skills and values they need to provide high-quality care to their patients.”

Seminole State College sophomore Ryan Carlisle, of Arapaho, attended the Nigh Institute Leadership Academy held in Oklahoma City Feb. 3-6.
Carlisle joined college students from across the state for the four-day academy. Over the course of the event, Carlisle and his peers volunteered at the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank, enjoyed an OKC Thunder game, toured the Oklahoma City National Memorial, visited the Bob Funk Ranch and experienced the First Americans Museum.

Seminole State College has released the names of honor roll students for the 2023 fall semester. Three separate honor rolls recognize students for their academic achievements.
The President’s Honor Roll is comprised of students who maintain a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average in at least 12 credit hours of coursework.
Students named to the Vice President’s Honor Roll must have a 3.5 grade-point-average or better and no grade below a “C”.
The Part-Time Students’ Honor Roll is for students who maintain a 3.5 grade-point-average with no grade below a “C” in at least six, but less than 12 college credit hours.
