Seminole State College is currently hosting Kids on Campus, a variety of children and youth camps scheduled throughout the summer. The Picasso Painting Camp builds creativity and self-esteem as each student sees his/her artwork through to a finished piece.
A retirement reception was held for Seminole State College employee Mary Higgins on May 30. Higgins worked for the College for 18 years as the Accounts Payable Clerk. She received her associate’s degree from SSC in 2000 and began working for the College shortly thereafter. She was an active member of the Classified Staff Association. She and her husband Wesley make their home in Tecumseh. She has two children, Matt Higgins and Sarah Stutzman. Thirty-five student-athletes and five athletic teams at Seminole State College have been recognized for their outstanding academic achievements this year by the National Junior College Athletic Association. The NJCAA All-American Student Athlete Awards are divided into the three groups based on GPA – First Team requires a 4.0 GPA, Second Team requires a GPA between 3.80 and 3.99, and Third Team requires a GPA between 3.60 and 3.79. Former Seminole State College Belles basketball player and the first Jamaican WNBA Player Simone Edwards, OD, has signed on as national spokesperson for Caribbean American Heritage Month. Edwards who was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, accepted the duties of spokesperson for Caribbean American Heritage Month to help bring more visibility to Caribbean Americans and the contributions they make. The Seminole State College Trojan Softball Team won their first round of the NJCAA JUCO World Series in St. George, Utah, May 22. The team defeated Shelton State Community College 12-4 and will face Wallace College of Alabama at 3:30 p.m. on May 23.

The Seminole State College-Gordon Cooper Technology Center Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program was recently award a five-year full accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. The program is the result of a three-year partnership between the two institutions, and is one of only eight accredited programs in the state. Four Seminole State College students recently completed a week-long personal finance and financial literacy class as part of the Neil Molleur KEY Scholarship Program.
The KEY (Keep Educating Yourself) seminar covered all aspects of financial literacy, as well as professional development tips. Discussions covered the psychology of money, budgeting, spending habits, credit, debt repayment, self-advocacy, community involvement and networking. The Seminole State College Board of Regents convened May 16 for their monthly meeting. The Board approved acceptance of a bid for improvements to the Enoch Kelly Haney Center parking area, a new campus wellness policy, the adoption of a strategic plan and the hiring of a new Vice President for Academic Affairs.
