Junk Journaling, Memoir Writing Courses Set for This Month at SSC

Seminole State College will launch two eight-week, for-credit courses in October designed to help students explore and preserve personal history through hands-on creativity and storytelling.

Self-Identity Through Junk Journaling (course code: ART 2301) begins Tuesday, Oct. 14, and meets 6-7:40 p.m. Tuesdays at the Seminole Arts Center, 139 N. Main St. The course is taught by Jamie Worthley, Assistant Professor of English. Through guided prompts, reflective exercises and creative exploration with found materials, students will build personalized journals capturing memories, values and dreams. No art experience is required, and most supplies are provided. The course fee is $100.

Worthley, an SSC alumna, holds a master’s degree in composition and rhetoric from the University of Central Oklahoma. She advises the Native American Student Association and Sigma Kappa Delta honor society.

Preserve Your Legacy: Memoir Writing for Seniors (course code: ENG 2301) begins Wednesday, Oct. 15, and meets 1:30-3:10 p.m. Wednesdays at the Seminole Public Library, 424 N. Main St. The class is taught by Paul Juhasz, SSC Assistant Professor of English and a 2025 Oklahoma Book Award finalist for his poetry collection “The Fires of Heraclitus.” Using prompts, storytelling techniques and group discussions, the course helps participants reflect on their journeys and share cherished memories. No prior writing experience is required, and all ages are welcome. The course fee is $100.

Juhasz teaches English and creative writing at SSC. His previous books include “Fulfillment: Diary of a Warehouse Picker,” “Ronin: Mostly Prose Poems” — a 2022 Oklahoma Book Award finalist — “The Inner Life of Comics” and “As If Place Matters.” He is a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee.
