NASA Astronaut to Speak at SSC NASNTI Event

Seminole State College’s Native American Serving Non-Tribal Institutions program will host NASA Commander Dr. John Herrington on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Jeff Johnston Auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Dr. Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw tribe, became the first enrolled member of a Native American tribe to fly in space in 2002. He served NASA from 1996 to 2005. During that time, he was assigned to the Flight Support Branch of the Astronaut Office, where he served on a team responsible for shuttle launch preparations and post-landing operations. He was a member of the Endeavor team on the 16th space shuttle mission to the International Space Station. On that mission, he and his crew provided structural support for the space station radiators.

The title of Dr. Herrington’s presentation is “Living Your Dreams.” Surrounding community members and students are welcome to attend the free event. If you would like to reserve a spot for a class, contact NASNTI Engagement Specialist Kay Wallace at k.wallace@sscok.edu or 405-382-9646.
