Seminole State College will open enrollment for the spring semester next Monday, Nov. 1 for prospective students. For students currently taking courses at the College, enrollment for next semester began Oct. 25. A current course schedule can be viewed on the College’s website at www.sscok.edu.

Five outstanding Seminole State College students were recently honored for the month of October. Each academic division selected one student to recognize based on work ethic, academic standing and campus involvement. The students were awarded a certificate from the Academic Affairs Office, a gift certificate to use at the Student Union Grill and a special parking pass allowing them access to park in any spot on campus for a month.
October’s students of the month are: Allison Bray of Wetumka – Social Sciences; Angela Copley of Shawnee – Health Sciences; Mark Ellis of Shawnee – STEM; Georgia Ledford of Seminole – Language Arts and Humanities; and Spencer Sturgill of Shawnee – Business and Education.
The Seminole State College Board of Regents met Oct. 21 to review the College’s annual external audit report and ratify the purchase of a new emergency alert system.
The meeting opened with a review of the College’s recent expenditures by Vice President for Fiscal Affairs Kristie Newby. Then SSC President Lana Reynolds presented her President’s Report, which included an update on the College’s personnel changes and information about campus activities.

The Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class took part in a behind-the-scenes tour of the Oklahoma Aquarium located in Jenks on Oct. 19. Educational Specialist Alyssa Rodriguez discussed the day-to-day work of caring for aquatic life, just before students viewed the shark tank.
PLC students learned about how food is prepared for different species of fish during the tour.
Seven Seminole State College Educational Foundation trustees were reappointed at the Foundation’s quarterly meeting on Oct. 13. Dan Boren, of Oklahoma City; Steve Degraffenreid, of Jones; Doug Humphreys of Holdenville; Lance Ruffel of Oklahoma City; Sue Snodgrass, of Seminole; Reggie Whitten, of Oklahoma City; and Chief Justin Wood, of Stroud all agreed to serve additional three-year terms.

Two Seminole State College employees were recognized for their hard work and dedication during the monthly Seminole Chamber of Commerce Forum on Oct. 12. Assistant Professor of Agriculture Wendy Rich was honored as “Faculty Member of the Month” and Human Resources Associate Julie Green as “Staff Member of the Month.”

Thirty-four Seminole State College students were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges on Oct. 5.
The induction ceremony was conducted virtually, utilizing Zoom video conference software.
Students were selected based on their scholarship, leadership and commitment to community. The chapter provides programs, organizes activities and encourages participation in community service projects.

The Seminole State College Student Government Association has selected its officers for the 2020-2021 academic year. The three officers were welcomed into their new roles at a luncheon on Oct. 11 with President Lana Reynolds.
SGA is dedicated to promoting the interests of the total student body by formulating and proposing ideas to the SSC administration. Financial Aid Specialist Caitlin Brown serves as the sponsor for the student organization.

Streater donated $10,000 to the Foundation, with $5,000 supporting construction efforts on the Brian Crawford Memorial Sports Complex and $5,000 set for the President’s Leadership Class (PLC) program. Streater was a member of PLC when he attended the College and said the program inspired him.
“This donation is a small thank you for what SSC did for me. PLC showed me what was possible, what was out there, and pushed me to accomplish my goals,” Streater said.
Beyond his donation, both he and his father, Dewayne Streater, have offered to donate work on the sports complex’s ongoing construction.
Members of the Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class toured the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Center and Aviary on Sept. 30. In addition to learning about the history of the Potawatomi people, PLC also viewed the eagles under the care of the CPN Aviary staff. The Aviary offers a permanent home for injured eagles that cannot be returned to the wild.
