Resume Writing Workshop Held at SSC

Seminole State College students recently had the opportunity to enhance their resume writing skills during the workshop titled “Creating Your Resume.” The workshop, presented by Dr. Katie Ward and sponsored by Student Support Services and STEM Student Support Services, proved to be a valuable resource for students seeking to craft compelling resumes.

Dr. Katie Ward, an accomplished professional serving as an FMS Chief within the Legacy Tanker Division at Tinker Air Force Base, shared her expertise in resume writing. With over 17 years of experience as a civilian working with the Air Force, Dr. Ward has not only honed her skills but also excelled as a resume writing consultant and career coach. Her insights come from reviewing thousands of resumes, with a specialization in government resumes, while also offering guidance for resumes across various sectors.

The workshop covered a wide range of topics, from the fundamentals of resume creation to more intricate details such as quantifying work experience. One participant highlighted the significance of a specific tip, saying, “I am glad I learned how important it is to leave your

graduation date off a resume. The graduation date can give away your age, which could result in age discrimination.”

Janna Wilson-Byrd, Director of the Student Support Services programs, expressed her appreciation for the collaboration.

“SSS and STEM SSS strive to provide our participants with a wide variety of programming outside the college classroom. Building a resume is a key component of college, but it is not taught in the classroom. We hope our students construct one prior to leaving our campus. Dr. Ward was so gracious to spend her time with us and offer her expertise. She is a phenomenal teacher,” Wilson-Byrd said.

The Seminole State College SSS Project, funded entirely by federal grants at an annual amount of $294,725, and the Seminole State College STEM SSS Project, with annual federal funding of $261,888, are two programs hosted at SSC.
