SSC Educational Foundation to Host 30th Annual Spring Recognition Banquet

The Seminole State College Educational Foundation will host its 30th Annual Spring Recognition Banquet on Thursday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Utterback Ballroom of the Enoch Kelly Haney Center on campus. The event will recognize achievements of alumni, employees and students.

This year’s event will include the induction of two former students, Phil Johnson and Karen Romine, into the SSC Alumni Hall of Fame. Additionally, former Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Brad Walck will receive the Distinguished Service Award.

Phil Johnson

Johnson, a 1988 graduate of then Seminole Junior College, serves as State Director of the Oklahoma Supreme Court Alternative Dispute Resolution System. He began working with the program in 1996 and was named State Director in 2016. In this role, he oversees 13 regional mediation offices serving all 77 counties in Oklahoma. Johnson has mediated more than 3,000 cases and regularly speaks at schools, community meetings and conferences across the state. A resident of Norman, he is involved with social justice efforts through the Xenia Institute and is active in the community.

Karen Romine

Romine, who graduated from SSC in 1999, earned her Associate in Applied Science in Nursing before completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bartlesville University and her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. Romine currently works as a Clinical Educator at SSM Health – St. Anthony Hospital in Shawnee. Her responsibilities include leading professional development for nursing staff and participating in initiatives such as clinical competency training, nurse residency programs and community health outreach. She previously served as a nursing instructor at SSC from 2005 to 2008. Romine lives in Shawnee with her husband, Kevin, and daughter, Mea.

Dr. Brad Walck

Walck, who served at SSC from 1991 to 2013, will be honored with the Distinguished Service Award. During his tenure, Walck held multiple roles including Vice President for Student Affairs, Women’s Basketball Head Coach, History Instructor and Chair of the Social Sciences Division. He led the Belles basketball team to six Bi-State Conference titles and averaged 24 wins per season. Prior to joining SSC, he worked at Tecumseh Public Schools for more than a decade. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Oklahoma Baptist University, two master’s degrees from East Central University, and a doctorate in Education Studies from the University of Oklahoma. His leadership extended to state-level roles, including serving as chair of the Oklahoma State Regents’ Council of Student Affairs. He also is a member of the Seminole Lions Club, where he served as President from 2009-2011. Walck and his wife, Kay, reside in Shawnee.

Campus organizational leaders, outstanding students, faculty and staff reaching milestone years of employment and retirees will also be recognized at the event.
