High School Students Can Still Enroll in Free SSC Courses |

As high school students across the area return to the classroom, Seminole State College is reminding eligible juniors and seniors that there is still time to speak with their school counselors about enrolling in college courses for the fall semester.

Classes at SSC begin Aug. 17. Eligible concurrent students within the college’s five-county service area can qualify for a state tuition waiver and an automatic SSC scholarship covering the cost of fees and textbooks.

The program is available to students attending high schools in Seminole, Pottawatomie, Hughes, Okfuskee and Lincoln counties, as well as homeschooled students who reside within those counties. Juniors may receive tuition, fees and textbooks for up to 9 credit hours, while seniors may receive coverage for up to 18 credit hours.

Concurrent enrollment allows students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. By beginning college coursework before graduation, students can make progress toward a degree, reduce future college expenses and gain experience in a college classroom.

Data from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education demonstrate the role concurrent enrollment can play in college completion. Approximately 28% of students earning an associate or bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma’s public colleges and universities previously participated in concurrent enrollment. The State Regents have also reported that graduation rates for students who participated in concurrent enrollment are higher than those of their peers at research universities, regional universities and two-year colleges.

New concurrent students should begin by speaking with their high school counselor. Students must complete SSC’s online application for admission, meet admission and college-readiness requirements, and submit a completed concurrent enrollment form, official high school transcript and test scores. SSC placement testing is also available for students who need to demonstrate college readiness in a particular subject.

Eligible students may initially see tuition and fee charges listed in their SSC account. After the College finalizes fall enrollment following the start of classes, the scholarship will be applied automatically. Students and families should then review the account to ensure the scholarship has been credited correctly.

Textbooks will be delivered to participating high schools during the first week of classes and do not need to be returned to SSC.

The scholarship is supported through the Scott Empowerment Fund, an endowed fund established following the SSC Educational Foundation’s historic $17 million gift from MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving.
