Five Reasons to Enroll in Summer Classes at SSC

Seminole State College students still have time to make progress toward their academic goals this summer. The College’s final slate of summer courses begins June 22, offering students a convenient opportunity to complete a requirement, build new skills or lighten their fall course load.

Courses available in the second five-week summer session include Macroeconomics, Personal Finance, Introduction to Microsoft Office, Child Development, Wellness and Human Development, Personality Theories, Developmental Psychology and Learning Strategies.

Here are five reasons students should consider enrolling.

1. Save money while earning college credit

SSC offers students an affordable way to earn college credit and stay on track toward graduation. For Oklahoma residents, SSC’s posted tuition and fees total $168 per credit hour, before course-specific fees, books and materials.

That rate is well below the statewide average for Oklahoma public higher education institutions. Based on 2025-2026 resident undergraduate tuition and mandatory fee rates listed by OKcollegestart, the average across Oklahoma public colleges and universities is approximately $221 per credit hour. SSC’s rate is about $53 less per credit hour, giving students a more affordable path to complete required coursework.

For students attending a larger university in the fall, summer enrollment at SSC can be a smart way to complete transferable general education courses at a lower cost. For current SSC students, it is an opportunity to keep making progress without stretching their budget. Either way, summer classes can help students save money while moving closer to their academic goals.

2. Get ahead before the fall semester

Summer classes can help students make meaningful progress in a short amount of time. Taking one class during the summer may help a student complete a general education requirement, move closer to graduation or free up space in a future semester for a more demanding course.

For students planning a busy fall schedule, summer enrollment can provide some breathing room. Completing a course now may make it easier to balance work, athletics, family responsibilities and full-time enrollment later in the year.

3. Choose courses with real-world value

Several of SSC’s remaining summer classes offer practical skills students can use in college, the workplace and everyday life.

Personal Finance can help students better understand budgeting, saving, credit and financial decision-making. Introduction to Microsoft Office provides experience with tools commonly used in professional and academic settings. Learning Strategies can help students strengthen study habits, time management and classroom confidence.

These courses are not only useful for earning credit. They can also help students feel more prepared for college, work and life after graduation.

4. Explore a field of interest

Summer is a good time for students to explore subjects that may connect to a future major or career path. Students interested in business may benefit from Macroeconomics or Personal Finance. Those considering education, psychology, social services or health-related fields may find value in Child Development, Personality Theories, Developmental Psychology or Wellness and Human Development.

A short summer course can help students discover whether a subject area is a good fit before committing to additional classes in that field.

5. Fit college into a busy schedule

Summer and online course options can make it easier for students to balance college with work, family and other responsibilities. Instead of waiting until the fall semester, students can use the summer term to focus on one course and make steady progress.

That flexibility can be especially helpful for students who are working during the summer, caring for family members or trying to make the most of their time before the fall semester begins. Online coursework can also reduce the time and cost associated with commuting, giving students more control over when and where they study.

SSC advisors are available to help students choose the right class, understand degree requirements and complete the enrollment process.
