SSC and ECU Students Collaborate on Community Project

Students from Seminole State College and East Central University recently collaborated on a community service project as part of their Composition II curriculum for the spring semester.

The course, taught by SSC/ECU shared Assistant Professor of English Jamie Worthley, featured a section on the idea that we do not battle consumerism by avoiding purchases; we battle consumerism by knowing our morals, values, roots and history.

The students put into practice what they learned – specifically by volunteering to help the homeless community. Students traveled to the homeless shelter “Mama T’s” in Ada, Oklahoma to clean and freshen-up the landscape by pulling weeds and clearing litter.

Students Uriah McPerryman, Natalie Neese, Samantha Huckleberry, Abbey Brooks and Channing Wortham work to clear trash from around the perimeter of Mama T’s, a homeless shelter located in Ada

Overall, 26 volunteers from SSC and ECU, including Professor Worthley, lent a hand in caring for the homeless community.

“I hope that this experience will breathe life into the essays and discussions that took place on Blackboard, Brightspace and in face-to-face classrooms.  As these young adults grow into our future community members, our goal is that education at ECU and SSC, paired with experiences such as this, will help form and nurture our students into leaders with compassion, kindness and intellect,” said Worthley.
