Seminole State College will offer “Math 4 Parents,” a community course designed to help parents and grandparents build confidence when assisting children with math homework, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Room 102 of the Enoch Kelly Haney Center.

The course will be led by SSC Vice President Emeritus Dr. Linda Goeller, a former mathematics professor at the College. The practical refresher will focus on math skills commonly encountered by students in fourth through sixth grades.

Topics will include addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, basic algebra and basic geometry. Participants will also have an opportunity to bring questions about concepts they may have encountered while helping children with homework.

The goal of the course is to give parents and grandparents a stronger understanding of foundational math concepts and greater confidence when working through assignments with students.

Goeller spent 12 years at SSC, serving in several academic leadership roles, including professor of mathematics, assessment coordinator, STEM division chair and vice president for academic affairs. She holds a doctorate in professional studies and mathematics education from Oklahoma State University. In 2019, she received the Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty Award from the American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes faculty members for their commitment to student learning and success.

“Math 4 Parents” is part of SSC’s Community and On Demand Courses, which provide educational opportunities for members of the public seeking to develop new skills or explore areas of interest.

The cost to attend is $15 per person. The course will be held on the SSC campus in the Haney Center Lecture Hall, Room 102.

Registration is available through the Community and On Demand Courses section of the SSC website, sscok.edu. For more information, contact Talina Lee at 405-382-9546 or t.lee@sscok.edu.
